Nocturnal Idiots is a hilariously funny, witty, bordering on sick, story about 7 boys all coming of age in the early 60s in a small village in the Northeast corner of Maryland. Marty is the main character. He moves to the village when he turns thirteen and falls in love with the place. The old lady next door has traveled most of the world. Marty is fascinated with the treasures she has brought back and the unbelievable, mesmerizing stories that go along with them. Marty and the boys of the village are caught in that realm between adolescents and adulthood. They are average kids during the day but when the sun goes down the mischief they get into never turns out the way they plan. Their reasoning hasn't matured yet. They 'borrow' a neighbor's car to go joy riding and wind up walking back home in the middle of the night. They are fascinated when the new drag strip opens. They get shot at when they push someone to his limits. They make sparks with a snow fence. They'll do anything to make the cars on the main road stop. They trespass on a really mean farmer's property and have a big altercation with him followed by a big police investigation. Marty goes to the dedication ceremony for the opening of the new Interstate 95 and sees President Kennedy. All the guys grow up and move away. In his old age Marty returns to the village he loves so much and reminisces all misty eyed about his youth and is surprised when he runs into someone from his nightmarish past.

I was taken back to a place and time where were we all wish time stood still. It was funny heart warming and filled with nostalgia. Will continue to read it over and over again.
This is a fun book to read. It takes you back to a time when kids entertained themselves by going outdoors and finding adventure. It'll tug at your heart as well as your funny bone. I enjoyed reading this book very much.
I enjoyed his story very much! A great read for anyone. I'm a tad younger than he is; but I can definitely remember my Dad talking about "going for a joy ride" in somebody else's car, hangin out at the corner store, and getting into "harmless" trouble with the same friends over & over again! I like the way the characters come to life; as though I was there. And it's funny! I recommend this story for a getaway from today's stressful world. It's fun!
I have to say I had higher expectation about this book since I grew up in the 60's around the same area. I was let down by the author's lack of articulation & creativity, as well as his obvious lack of writing skill. I wouldn't recommend spending your time or money on this one.
